Today marks the 154thyear anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the US. It was on this day in 1865 that former slaves became free. It is important to note that this was a little over two years after president Lincoln had already signed the Emancipation Proclamation which had become official on January 1stof 1863. This however had little impact in Texas due to the small number of Union troops stationed there to enforce it. Union troops were finally able to overcome the resistance after the surrender of General Lee in 1865 and with the arrival of General Granger’s regiment. Despite the time it took to fully enforce the Emancipation Proclamation, it is still an important day in ourhistory to commemorate. This dark time in our history is important toreflect on in order to build a better future for everyone, regardless of their background.
